These gamebooks were designed to be portable so that they could be played in the car or in other situations where a pair of dice and a photocopied character sheet might be inconvenient. Thus, they are designed to be playable without randomization, and they contain all of the necessary accessories on special fold-out flaps attached to the front and back covers. Although most accessories vary from book to book, every adventure includes two full flap pages printed with thirty to forty small score cards for tracking character attributes and inventory. The cards are printed many times so that the book can be played again and again even without an eraser, and in one adventure (Murder in the Dark), these cards actually determine the paragraph number that provides a solution to the book's mystery, allowing a different outcome on each readthrough. In addition to the cards, the fold-out flaps feature maps, codebooks and other inventory items that the reader may come across during play, thus serving the same purpose as the "gamekits" included with Stephen Thraves' larger-format works. The adventures all stand alone in terms of plot. Towards the end of its life, the series featured a format and name change and became the Stephen Thraves Adventure Gamebooks.
